Holiday Candles

Part of the first grade curriculum is learning about holiday celebrations around the world.  In art class, we reviewed some of those celebrations that take place at this dark time of the year that involve candles.  The list we came up with included Christmas, Advent, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah.

First graders drew with pencil step-by-step as I taught them how to draw their group of candles.  Next, they outlined with Sharpies and erased pencil lines.  Finally, they colored with oil pastels.  When choosing colors, I reminded them to use contrasting colors to make their candles stand out from the background.  We glued our completed project to black construction paper to finish it off.
