Organizers from the U.P. Honor Flight use student art to welcome veterans to their hotel rooms the night before the flight. I was approached to see if we could help out with some patriotic art. This is the project I came up with.
We first talked about what the Honor Flight is and how special it is that veterans are thanked for their service with a flight to Washington D.C. to visit memorials. We talked about ways that we could say thank you to them, and then we brainstormed some ideas on the board. Students wrote a short message to a veteran and signed thier first name. Then we looked at art by Jasper Johns, who is well-known for his flag art. Finally, I passed out red and blue squares of printed paper and taught students how to glue their flag mosaic together. As a finishing touch, we used a star paper puncher to add some stars to the blue field. I did mention that the real flag has 50 stars and 13 stripes.
