2nd graders learned about how special our area is during this lesson on Monarch butterflies. We talked about how the Monarchs stop in Stonington on their migration to Mexico. We also watched a short video to learn more about their life cycle and their journey.
First, students drew half of a butterfly in pencil. Then they traced the pencil with black glue. Next, they folded the paper to transfer some of the glue to the other side. Voila! A perfectly symmetrical butterfly. The next week, we used watercolors to paint the butterfly and the background. Students used orange and yellow to give the wings some variation in color. They chose the background color. Lastly, we added white dots with tempera paints.
