March is reading month! In the art room, I always celebrate with an illustrator study. Second graders learn about Eric Carle, author of MANY picture books including
The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I showed students a
video of Carle painting his papers - he layers color and texture. Then I showed them a
video of Carle discussing and reading his book, T
he Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse. In it, Carle talks about how Franz Marc inspired him to create with abandon. A horse doesn't have to be brown!

Day 1- Each student painted 3 papers with tempra paint- no pictures, just texture and designs. |
 |
Day 2 - Students used patterns to cut some of the parts of the owls or roosters.
I had different classes do different subjects. |
 |
Day 3 - Students finished assembling their collage. |
